Big O (5-Card Omaha Hi-Lo)

Quick Rules

1. Each player is dealt 5 hole cards face down.
2. 5 community cards are dealt in 3 stages: flop (3), turn (1), river (1).
3. Players MUST use exactly 2 hole cards and exactly 3 community cards for each half.
4. The pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualifying low hand.
5. Low must be 5 unpaired cards ranked 8 or below (aces play low); no qualifying low means the high hand wins the whole pot.
6. Different two-card combinations may be used for the high and the low.
7. Maximum bet is the size of the pot (pot-limit).

Strategy Notes

A-2-x-x-x is close to mandatory: with five cards the nut low is made and counterfeited constantly, so A-2 with a backup 3 is the premium holding. Scoop equity is everything — one-way high hands get quartered and one-way lows get scooped. Nut-or-nothing applies harder than in PLO: with 10 two-card combinations per player, second-nut flushes and non-nut straights are losers. Being quartered for a large pot is the main way strong players lose money in this game.

Home Game Tips

Card supply is tight: 9 players use 45 hole cards plus 5 board cards, leaving nothing for burns, so either cap the table at 8 or agree in advance to deal 9-handed without burn cards. Only introduce this after the group is fluent in both Omaha Hi-Lo and the exactly-two-from-hand rule — it combines the two hardest concepts in the family. Expect large split pots and slower showdowns; budget extra time per hand.
