Chicago

specialtymedium complexity2-7 players (ideal: 6)

Also known as: Chicago High, Chicago Low, High Chicago, Low Chicago

A Seven-Card Stud variant where half the pot goes to the best standard poker hand and half to the player holding the highest (High Chicago) or lowest (Low Chicago) spade in the hole (face down). This split incentivizes chasing spades and creates unique strategic tension. A player can win both halves.

Quick Rules

  1. Played exactly like Seven-Card Stud: 2 down, 4 up, 1 down.
  2. Half the pot goes to the best 5-card poker hand (standard rankings).
  3. The other half goes to the highest spade in the hole (High Chicago) or lowest (Low Chicago).
  4. Only face-DOWN spades count for the spade half — face-up spades are not eligible.
  5. Ace of spades in the hole is the best card in High Chicago; 2 of spades in Low Chicago.
  6. One player can scoop both halves.

Strategy Notes

A hidden ace or deuce of spades in the hole is extremely valuable since it locks up half the pot. Balance your play between pursuing the best poker hand and protecting your spade cards. Keeping spades face down is critical — never expose a winning spade by choice.

Home Game Tips

Decide on High Chicago or Low Chicago before starting. High Chicago (highest spade wins) is the more common version. The spade-in-the-hole mechanic adds an easy-to-understand side game that makes every hand more interesting. Great for groups that enjoy Seven-Card Stud.
