studlow complexity2-10 players (ideal: 7)

Also known as: 5-Card Stud

The oldest and simplest form of Stud poker. Each player receives one card face down and four cards face up over four betting rounds. With only one hidden card, the game is heavily driven by visible board information. Once the most popular form of poker in America, now rarely spread.

Quick Rules

  1. Each player antes and receives 1 card face down and 1 card face up.
  2. The lowest up card posts a forced bring-in bet.
  3. Three more cards are dealt face up one at a time, with a betting round after each.
  4. Best 5-card hand wins.
  5. Only 1 card is hidden — bluffing is difficult since most information is visible.

Strategy Notes

With four of five cards exposed, hand reading is straightforward. High pairs on early streets are very strong. Bluffing is rare and difficult since opponents can see most of your hand. Fold early if your hand is clearly behind.

Home Game Tips

A good introductory poker variant due to its simplicity. Plays quickly but can feel repetitive. Best used as one rotation in a dealer's choice game rather than a full session.
