Also known as: Stud 8-or-Better, Stud Hi-Lo, Stud/8, Seven Stud Hi-Lo Split

A split-pot version of Seven-Card Stud where the pot is divided between the best high hand and the best qualifying low hand (8-or-better). Combines the memory and card-tracking aspects of Stud with the split-pot strategy of hi-lo games.

Quick Rules

  1. Dealt and played identically to Seven-Card Stud (2 down, 4 up, 1 down).
  2. Pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualifying low hand.
  3. Low hand must have 5 unpaired cards ranked 8 or below (aces play low).
  4. If no qualifying low exists, the high hand scoops the entire pot.
  5. A player may use different cards from their 7 for high and low.

Strategy Notes

Starting with three low cards (especially A-2-3 or A-2-4) is ideal since these hands can scoop by making a wheel (A-2-3-4-5 is the best low and a straight for high). Avoid one-way high hands unless they are very strong.

Home Game Tips

One of the more complex games to deal and evaluate. Best for experienced groups. Consider using a cheat sheet for low hand qualification until players are comfortable. Hands take longer than standard Stud.
